King of the Nerds

Started a blog just to post about the TBS show King of the Nerds which starts its second season tonight. Later I will blog about various other topics in which i am interested including TV, baseball, football, true crime, history, linguistics, mysterious things and places, travel, geography, etc.

KING OF THE NERDS is a Big Brother-esque show on TBS. The show recruits people classified as nerds, using a relatively broad definition of such. Unlike BEAUTY AND THE GEEK, a predecessor show on the CW network, the people on this one seem to actually be nerds-- people with high intelligence interested in arcane things of primarily an academic, scientific or virtual nature. On Beauty and the Geek, the geeks seemed to be primarily misfit guys, some of which were not very bright, particularly the guy who became the star of the show. Several of the geeks also seemed to be reality star wannabee trypes (ie the bartender/model/actor crowd) seen on all such shows.

King of the Nerds has much better casting, although I am somewhat surprised by the number of women in the cast. TBS ran a marathon of season 1 over the weekend so I watched it and am mad all over at the results.

Anyway here's thecomplaint. Last year's show was good except for its ending and the fact that the blue team was cheated out of two challenges they clearly won (the debate and the anthem) by celebrity judges with agendas (Crummy director Kevin Smith and some rapper). The show's ultimates winner, Celeste, was totally undeserving. It reminded me of many finales of the APPRENTICE where Trump picked undeserving winners just because he liked one person more than another. (Annie Duke got robbed when Trump picked Joan Rivers instead! I really haven't watched the show since.) Genevieve should have won. Celeste his for most of the show and successfully dodged all individual challenges until the last two, eneither of which she won outright. She only made the three because Ivan, the pompous bully of the group, made a mistake in a maze challenge and she got by him (naturally following others). In group challenges she failed in a debate (got stage fright) and was not a major force in the few successes her team had. Meanwhile Genevieve helped her team win group challenges and won three individual challenges. In all three cases she beat people who felt the challenge was in their area of expertise.

But the final challenge ended up being a vote by the ousted contestants which saw the useless Celeste win 5-3. Since Genevieve had played a role in getting three of the voters out (one of whom, arrogant pink-haired brat Danielle swore she would not vote for Genevieve after she lost). Using the excuse that Celeste "grew in the game" (but not enough to actuually face off in an individual challewnge and actually win something), the sore losers picked her as some sort of an inside joke. Very disappointing even almost a year later!

Redeeming feature. The show has realized its mistake and announced the final challenge will not be a popularity contest but a nerd-off so no winner will be proclaimed without testing themselves one-on-one. Good move. Additionally, Genevieve is on the promotional videos for the show, not Celeste. Another good move.
